Elizabethan team sports were popular during the region of Queen Elizabeth. The team sports were enjoyed by both the players and spectators. This Era was very dangerous and violent. Blood sports were enjoyed. There were even some card games played in teams such as ‘Ruff and Honors’! The contests were subject to heavy gaming and gambling. The Elizabeth hunting was designed for fit, young and very active men who worked in teams to hunt. The Tournaments included many team elements. They also had individual sports which were archery, billards, colf, fencing, hammer-throwing, horseshoes, quarter staff contests, tennis, and wrestling. Archery was really popular during this era and prizes could be won for the most skilled archers. Billiards is a forerunner to the Pool played today. Colf is like golf; the ball is consisted of a leather casing, usually made from a bull’s hide, soaked in alum and stuffed with softened goose feathers. Fencing was a sword fight. Hammer-throwing was a sport of skill, technique and strength. Horseshoes is throwing horseshoes at target.
